Our History

The Stoughton Baptist Church had its earliest beginnings as a series of Bible studies in the home of Erling and Mary Linnerud. These Bible studies began in March of 1968. In May of that same year, Brother Linnerud and several others who were involved in the Bible studies agreed to purchase the former Burritt School which was located at the corner of County Highway B and Williams Drive. After some clean-up and a little remodeling, Bible Study and Prayer Meetings began in the basement of the building with Sunday Morning Services beginning in September. The church called its first pastor, George Cable, on September 22, 1968. On January 12, 1969 the charter was signed by 43 people and the Stoughton Baptist Church was officially organized.

Through the years a lot of remodeling has been done to the former Burritt School including several additions which made it easier to house the growing congregation. In addition, several acres of adjacent property were purchased along with a ranch style house which was moved to the church property to serve as the parsonage. The church and parsonage still sit on the corner of County Highway B and Williams Drive in Stoughton and serve as the meeting place for Stoughton Baptist Church.

Our church has had a total of 6 pastors. George Cable was the church’s first pastor and served from 1968 to 1975. He was followed by Charles Mellring who served as pastor from 1975 to 1977. He was followed by Frank Moore who served as pastor from 1978 to 1983. He was followed by Ron Prater who served as pastor from 1984 to 1988. He was followed by Phillip Mikkelson who served as pastor from 1990 to 2007. He was followed by Mark Weiss who has served as pastor from 2008 to the present.

As we pause to reflect upon our church’s history, we are excited for the future as we try our best to remain faithful to carry out our Lord’s “Great Commission” of winning souls, baptizing the saved, and teaching men, women and children the Word of God. We are also very thankful for the faithful members through the years who have stood by the pastors and staff of the church and have helped to make our church what it is today.
